The species represents the wild prototype from the domesticated goat. The species unlike other domesticated animal species still tends to wild life and there are several populations due to dispersed goat herds that have returned to the wild. For years, in Sicily, the flock living on the upper part of Mount Etna was famous, while on the very summit of Campanito a magnificent dark-skinned goat became the undisputed lord of the rocks.
