The flora of Sicily

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by the minor islands, Malta, Aeolian (Eolie), Aegadian (Egadi), Pelagie, Pantelleria and Ustica, is considered a domain in term of Flora.It is divided into two sectors: Eusiculo (related to the Sicily island) and Pelagic (related to the smaller Sicilian islands).
The Eusiculo sector includes the following subsectors: North Eastern fineludes the Madonite, the Nebredien, the Peloriten, the Etnean and the Aeolian districts). Western (includes the Egadense and the Drepano-panormitano districts); Central (includes the Agrigentino and the Catanense districts); Southern (includes the Ibleo and the Camarino-pachinense districts). The North-Eastern districts represent the main Sicilian floristic domain, which is characterized by a rich variety of endemic species. On the north-eastern sector mountains of the island, called Val Demon, grows most of the Mediterranean’s floristic biodiversity.
The ancient plants species, survived the several geological changes, and the latest species represent a treasure of inestimable value. The Sicilian flora is favored by the island’s location straddles the three big areas, African, European and Middle Eastern.
